who have impacted the history
of the sport.
Writer of Perry Mason Books and TV Series
History will bare out that
sometimes some of our great bowhunters of the '30s and '40s were
overlooked as being real Legends of our Sport.
Just before Roy Hoff, the owner and editor of
the Archery Magazine, passed
away one of his closing columns with me (Doug Walker) talked about this.
I knew about Erle Stanley
Gardner's famous writings of over 200 of the Perry Mason books that
later were made into a TV series with Raymond Burr, and I also remember
reading about some of his bowhunting adventures that were printed in the
old Bowman Review. I
even wrote a story myself about Erle Stanley Gardner, about one of his
elk hunts when he successfully took a beautiful 6-point bull elk (see
photo this page).
Back in those days, Erle
was more than going on successful bow hunts, he was writing about them.
Anyone reading any of Erle's stories soon realized that he enjoyed
writing even more about his love for the sport and especially about the
camaraderie of a bow hunt. Erle hunted with many of the greats of our
sport - Howard Hill, George Brommers, Dr. Paul Klopsteg, the Wilhelm
Brothers, and Roy Case - just to name a few.
