who have shown Literary Excellence that have Advanced the Sport of
Bowhunting
Mike Standlund began bowhunting and writing
for outdoor magazines in his mid-teens. Growing up in Minnesota and
Wisconsin, he obtained a degree in journalism from the University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1980, financing his education by freelance
writing and trapping. Strandlund spent five years as a newspaper editor
in Wisconsin and five years as a writer and editor for the National
Rifle Association before joining Bowhunting World and Archery Business
magazines in 1990. He was named editor of the titles in 1993 and
promoted to editorial director in 2002.
Mike's writing reflect the true spirit of
bowhunting and it shines through to not only new bowhunters and old
bowhunters alike, it has also reached out to all sportsmen as well.
Strandlund practices both modern and traditional archery and has
bowhunted across North America and Africa. He counts whitetails, elk,
wooden recurves, tight groups, September sunsets and November daybreaks
among his favorite things.
"All the most important things in life -
patience and acceptance, beauty and honor, strength and love, physical
and mental acuity, challenge and compassion - are all distilled in
bowhunting. That's what makes it so fascinating to do, and to write
about," he said.
